JANUARY 2020 CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM, GOAL SETTING

Happy 2020 to all! As we’ve started the new year, we’ve begun talking about goal setting with our students. Last month we talked about commitment and this month we’re hoping to use what we’ve learned to help students set goals that they can work towards, stick to and eventually achieve!

Some questions to think about with goal setting include, What will it take to accomplish my goal?, Will I need help from anyone?, What if I have trouble along the way?, When is a realistic time to accomplish this by? With these questions we will remind everyone that any big goal takes a bunch of little steps that you need to do every day to get closer to your goal. We encourage white belts to set a goal to become a black belt, but that doesn’t happen in a week! They can first set a goal to get their yellow belt, or even their next stripe on their belt. In order to get that, they need to know their form really well, work hard and focus in every class and get stronger and stronger, so maybe they set a goal to practice Universe 1 a few times a week and practice doing some front punches and 5-10 pushups every day at home.

We’ll also encourage students to set goals outside of karate, like with school, other athletics, hobbies and anything else they want to get better at! Instructors will share some of their goals including past ones they have accomplished and future ones they have, along with tips on how to get past any setbacks that may occur while working towards a goal.

We look forward to hearing about all of our students goals and helping them see them through throughout the year!
